Our ignorance on this matter, however, is not of crucial importance. For even if we knew the circumstances in which belief in life after death originated in the religion of Israel and early Judaism, we would not really have accounted for the importance that this belief acquired. Determination of the circumstances of its origin cannot explain why belief in life after death became and remained the general Jewish belief long after the particular circumstances in which it arose had passed.
